DIY Quilts

Since the May vacation here, which started in the last week of April, I've made two quilts.  I learned how to quilt from here.  The site was very informative and had lots of pictures.  I didn't actually do the quilt top like their example there though.

I thought the hourglass quilt top looked cute, so I did the same, following the instructions from here.   I bought the fabric pieces and cut them up. myself.  Sadly, the batting isn't great because I used the one I found at the market.  The quilt itself did take me 2 weeks though.  The white "cotton" fabric I don't think is actually cotton and was too lightweight.

This is the back of the hourglass quilt.  I didn't want to use just a plain coloured backing, that way the quilt can be used either way!
The I-Spy quilt below I used much much better materials.  I ordered 80% cotton 20% poly batting off the internet. The quilt itself is also much larger, almost twin size.  I've used it myself now, it's that big!  It's intended to be a fun quilt for the baby, to crawl on and to play I Spy with when he's older~

The 88 5" I Spy squares I also ordered off the internet, to ensure I have that many different types.  I think overall the I-Spy quilt was less time-consuming.
The how-to for this quilt top was from here.  I made a few changes: 5" I-Spy squares instead of 4".  Accordingly, the sashing squares and setting squares were also larger.

The backing fabric was just not wide enough, so I added a strip of the orange setting square fabric to it to ensure it is wide enough.  Once again, chose a non-solid backing so the quilt can be used either way.
Quilting sucks time.  It's amazing how much work this all was!  Lots of cutting, sewing, then cutting and sewing again.  Plus the ironing in-between.  I don't think I'll make another quilt unless there is a NEED.
